Escalator Steps

Escalator step quote information needed:

UNITEC is your provider for OEM Otis Escalator Steps. Before you email or phone UNITEC or make a selection of a Step from the list below, please have the following set of information in hand and ready for sharing and reference:

  • The Otis escalator unit type you looking to replace steps on
  • The address of the Otis installation
  • The sales number of the job
  • Escalator step width
  • Color of step top tread area and riser area
  • Step total quantity needed for your servicing needs
  • Is the unit indoor or outdoor – (i.e. will your customer expect weather resistant steps or not?)
  • Is the riser a smooth or cleated riser
  • What demarcation is present on the existing steps, or what demarcation is now required for your replacement steps?
    • NOTE:  if you are making a change to the demarcation type, you must understand that a full complement of steps is necessary for the entire rise of steps to look uniform.
    • AND:  if you change from having no demarcation inserts on the sides of the steps to steps having demarcation inserts, understand that these inserts are slightly raised and as a result require different end combs at each landing – 4 new combs total
  • What color demarcation do you require? Yellow is standard.  Anything else is special order.
  • If you require painted demarcation lines or plastic demarcation inserts
  • On which portions of the step you require the demarcation to be present:
    • Both sides of the step
    • Just the back edge of the step
    • Three edges of the step (The back edge and both sides)

Terminology:

Linishing - tread finishing:

When the Step treads are Linished,  the tops of the ribs on the tread surface are sanded, removing the paint.  Nearly all steps UNITEC provides will be LINISHED.

Outdoor/weather resistant:

Outdoor: The definition of what constitutes an Outdoor step has changed over time.  In most cases for older steps previously identified as ‘outdoor’, the current production Indoor (Standard) step meets all of the requirements of that older Outdoor specification.  The current production Outdoor steps only differ from the Indoor version in that they include hubcaps on the trailer wheels and additional lube for those wheels.  Indoor and Outdoor steps are interchangeable for shutdown purposes.

Index Pin:

This is the spring loaded pin that latches the step to the bushing on the step chain axle.  The option for steps without the Index Pin is rare and limited to some heavy duty units (510 and higher) on a per-contract basis.  UNITEC will only typically quote steps with the Index Pin.  The cost difference is negligible, and for the few units that do not use them, removal of the pins by the mechanic at the time of installation is a simple task.

Final notes on ‘look’ of replacement steps carrying demarcation inserts:

Be careful when substituting steps with three sided plastic demarcation.  Earlier steps have a narrower demarcation insert across the back edge than the latest service replacement steps.  The steps will interchange as a whole, but some customers object to the cosmetic inconsistency of having an escalator with a mix of the two styles of demarcation.  If the customer is replacing all of the steps in a unit, or will accept the visual difference, the latest SERVICE REPLACEMENT version of the step UNITEC offers should be selected and quoted.   If the difference in look is objectionable, contact your UNITEC representative directly for any potential options.
