506 Escalaire/Escalator Rebuilds

506  Escalaire Complete Unit Assembly View

The Otis 506 type units are widely recognized for their distinctive glass balustrades, often referred to interchangeably as 506-Escalaires or 506-Escalators. It's important to note that these 506 units are not the same as the 506SL Otis units, and parts should not be used interchangeably between these models. While the steps may be the same, we recommend consulting your UNITEC representative for assistance with parts to ensure compatibility and proper functionality. A key feature of the 506-Escalaires is the two belt-driven handrail drive devices located near the top end beneath the balustrade. This handrail drive is powered by a separate chain connected to the main drive. The 506-Aires utilized either EC143 machines or 16VEC-RH machines, both of which have exceeded their typical service life. To address this, UNITEC offers the EC2-7 Service Replacement Machine solution, ensuring continued reliability and performance.

The Electrical Safety Device Identification Guide - 506

The comprehensive chart provided here details the various safety switches, contacts, or devices used in the 506-Escalaires. The designations listed correspond to the electrical designations found on the wiring diagrams for your specific unit. To accurately identify the presence of specific switches or electrical devices, it is essential to thoroughly review both your wiring diagram and the features of your unit. It's important to note that not all 506 units include certain functions, such as the brake lifting function (brake arm switch) or the brake lining wear switches. If you are considering replacing or adding certain switches, this chart serves as a valuable resource. It helps you verify if these components are present on your wiring diagram and whether they can be reasonably replaced or added for a modification (MOD)

506 Escalator Rebuild Parts List and Worksheet

If you're planning a major rebuild of one or more OTIS 506 Escalaires, we highly recommend utilizing this worksheet. Unitec has successfully assisted many customers in rebuilding their 506 units, and this worksheet, along with the accompanying parts list, offers a comprehensive overview of the parts and components involved in a thorough rebuild. Begin at the job site with this worksheet in hand. Collaborate with your lead mechanic to review each part of the system, determining which items should remain on the initial list for quoting. This serves as an excellent starting point, outlining the most common replacement components, and can be a valuable tool for demonstrating to your building manager the full scope and possibilities of the escalator rebuild.

Once you've completed and customized the worksheet with quantities and selections, Unitec will use it to provide you with a prompt and accurate quote for your rebuild needs.

506 Escalator Rebuild Flyer

We encourage you to use this concise and informative flyer when discussing proposals for your 506-Escalaire rebuild with the building manager. Leave a copy with your customer to ensure they have a clear understanding of the key components that must be considered for overhaul or replacement as this ~1990s equipment reaches this stage in its lifecycle. It's important to highlight to both your customer and the building manager the critical areas of equipment that require attention. Mechanical systems endure significant loads and incidents over time, leading to performance changes that may not be immediately visible without thorough inspection. For instance, certain track sections in landing and turnaround areas may show wear. Originally robust in design, sheet metal escalator tracks can thin and wear away after 25-30 years of continuous load-bearing and cycling, even with polyurethane rollers in use. It's crucial to evaluate these less visible components within your Otis Escalator system and include them in your comprehensive rebuild quote, even if only as an option or addition.

Rest assured, we are here to assist you throughout this process, ensuring you have the support you need for a successful rebuild.
